Smash Fine Arts Festival Brings a Summer Gallery Walk to Cherry Creek

For one weekend in June, and again in August, Fillmore Plaza trades its usual Cherry Creek polish for something a little more colorful, a little more curious and a lot more fun to wander through. The Smash Fine Arts Festival returns to Cherry Creek North with a juried lineup of national artists, live music and the rare kind of summer programming that feels equally suited to collectors, casual browsers and people who simply know a good Saturday when they see one.

Now in its eighth year in Cherry Creek, Smash has become one of the neighborhood’s most charming warm-weather rituals. Held June 6 and 7, then again August 8 and 9, the festival turns Fillmore Street between First and Second Avenue into an outdoor gallery, with artists showing work across sculpture, painting, photography, jewelry, mixed media and more. The format is easy, but the art is serious. Guests can meet the artists, hear the stories behind the work and discover pieces in a setting that feels far more inviting than intimidating.

That balance is the secret sauce. Smash is polished enough for Cherry Creek, but not so buttoned-up that you feel afraid to ask a question. It has live violin, piano and acoustic music, but it is not trying to be precious. It is the kind of event where you can arrive after brunch, wander with an iced coffee, fall in love with a bronze sculpture, text your designer a photo of a painting and somehow still convince yourself you were “just looking.”

The festival’s 2026 artist lineup brings together a wide range of styles and mediums, from dramatic landscapes and sculptural forms to bold color, intricate detail and contemporary pieces that pull you in slowly. Previous years have included internationally collected artists, Colorado talent and makers whose work spans everything from fine jewelry to large-scale statement pieces. This year’s new artist preview suggests the same mix of polish and surprise, with enough range to keep even the “I’m not really an art person” person engaged.

Part of what makes Smash work so well is where it happens. Fillmore Plaza is already one of Cherry Creek’s best little stages, surrounded by restaurants, boutiques, hotels, galleries and patios. During the festival, it becomes a living room for the neighborhood. Collectors compare notes. Friends loop back to booths they cannot quite forget. Kids gravitate toward color. Dogs behave like they were invited. People linger, which is really the whole point.

It is also one of the rare events that gives art a sense of ease. There is no hushed gallery voice required, no pressure to know the right terminology, no velvet rope between viewer and maker. You can ask how something was made, what inspired it or whether it would survive above a fireplace in a house full of children and golden retrievers. The artists are there, the work is right in front of you and the experience feels personal in a way that online browsing never can.

The best approach is to make an afternoon of it. Start with a slow lap. Then take a second one. Talk to the artists. Notice what keeps catching your eye. Break for lunch, a glass of wine or a little shopping, then circle back to the piece you have been mentally placing in your living room for the past hour. That is usually the one worth paying attention to.
